The youngest ever elected president of the Goodwood Merriman Lions Club, Jamie Conway, has proven to be more than just a pretty face with exceptional leadership skills when she released a music album called Chaotic Growth on YouTube last week (2 January).
According to Conway, she has always been in love with punk and rap music, with great inspirations like Machine Gun Kelly, Eminem, Blink 182 and many more, but she started writing lyrics and playing the guitar when she was only 11 years old.
“Like a lot of kids, I dreamed of making music and I wanted to help people and give them something to relate to. It was such an incredible outlet for my emotions when I was a teenager, and I wanted to honour those childhood dreams by bringing this album to life,” Conway said.
When Conway was asked about her stage name, Dr Skietz, she said it comes from an Australian animated series on YouTube called The Big Lez Show. They spell the word “skietz” differently in the show, and they use it as a word for a great adventure. “That is how I wanted my life to be, so I started living differently, making every day a new journey with amazing friends doing unorthodox things,” Conway explained.
This upcoming artist is juggling quite a lot now.
“I’m studying full-time, doing my Masters in English Literature, working full-time as a writer for an amazing media and targeted writing company, Room 206. I am the president of the Merriman Lions Club, and still making music on the side. My schedule can get insane sometimes, while still fitting in time with friends and family,” but according to Conway when you love what you do, you find a way to make it work.
Conway said 2022 was an exceptionally long and difficult year, and yet still the best year of her life. There were times when it felt chaotic, and she was feeling lost, but there was such incredible growth. “It was the worst of times; it was the best of times. We as people will sometimes find that amongst the greatest of chaos, we thrive and become better humans as a result. That’s what ‘Chaotic Growth’ is all about.”
When you listen to the album, you will find love, anger, happiness, and peace, it is diverse in that respect, says Conway.
“I’ve found that a lot of the world is numb right now and struggling to feel, and when I write, people have told me that it makes them feel something, they relate to what I say, and it helps them get through the night. That is all I want to do, help people feel and grow, even if I only reach one person, that is enough. I also see the album as a love letter to the people closest to me, for everything they’ve done in the past year, at my lowest and highest moments.”
The song that stood out the most for her was the title track, “Chaotic Growth”. “It is very close to my heart. I wrote the song to convey a specific message, that we do not need to be focused on the things on the surface and that we are in control of our lives, even if sometimes we lose our grip.
“If you have people, that’s your home, and you will always have a place to return to after the chaos. And sometimes you will be afraid of change, scared of losing, but you need to embrace that change to grow.”
She added that this song is a moment of unity between us as humans, a unity in the pain, the change, the loss, the joy, and everything in between. “We are in this together,” Conway said.
