Ashley Simpson’s surprise appearance on stage with Demi Lovato in Los Angeles this past September appears to have sparked the music bug back into the mother of three.
During an appearance on The Jennifer Hudson Show, which aired earlier this week, the Pieces Of Me singer confessed she plans to write and record a new studio album.
And while explaining how motherhood kept taking precedence when she had the itch to make new music over the years, Simpson revealed that she has played some of her new music to her mother-in-law, who just happens to be the legendary Supremes lead singer Diana Ross.
Nerves over mother-in-law: After revealing that she’s going to record a new studio album, Ashley Simpson confessed to how ‘nerve-wracking’ it is when she plays new music for her mother-in-law, Diana Ross
And as you would expect, Simpson confessed to being nervous whenever she got advice from the Ain’t No Mountain High Enough singer.
‘I think it’s nerve-wracking at first playing music for anyone when it’s new, but definitely her,’ Simpson told Hudson. ‘You’re like, “Oh, please like it.”‘
The singer and actress, 38, went on to confess there are ‘definitely butterflies’ when playing one of her songs for the iconic Motown crooner, 78.
‘But she’s such a wonderful mother-in-law. She’s very encouraging, and she definitely helped us on the album too,’ she added, in a reference to the Ashlee + Evan EP Simpson did with her husband Evan Ross, 34, that dropped in October 2018.
Intimidating: The singer and actress, 38, confessed that there are ‘definitely butterflies’ when she plays one of her songs for the iconic Motown crooner
Diana Ross first hit the big time as the lead singer of the Supremes, who have the distinction of being the best-charting female group in history, with a total of 12 number-one hit singles on the US Billboard Hot 100, including Where Did Our Love Go, Baby Love, Come See About Me and Love Child
Following departure from the Supremes in 1970, Ross embarked on a successful solo career in music, as well as film, television and the stage.
During Simpson’s chat on the set of the new talk show, she reminisced about it being 20 years since her hit debut studio album, Autobiography (2004), was released.
On the heels of three hit singles: Pieces Of Me, Shadow and La La, the record went on to debut at number one on the Billboard 200 chart in July 2004, and has since been certified triple platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), which translates to more than 3,000,000 sold.
Ross played an important role in her son’s wedding to Simpson in 2014, by officiating the ceremony and singing at the reception
She also shared about how excited she was to be asked to get on stage and sing La La with Demi Lovato last fall.
‘It was fun fun energy. We had a rally good time together,’ she told Hudson, adding, ‘It definitely made me miss the stage and singing.’
After being asked by Hudson if she was going to, in fact, do a new studio album, Simpson explained how she has had the itch to make new music but it just didn’t work out, largely due to her responsibilities as a mother and wife.
‘I keep saying I’m coming out with an album! I’m coming out with an album! And now I have too. Then, I keep having babies so,’ she added, which elicited laughs and an ovation from the live studio audience.
‘Now my baby is two, so it’s time,’ she added to Hudson.
New music: Simpson revealed how her responsibilities as a mother and wife kept taking precedence when she had the itch to make new music over the years; but in the appearance on The Jennifer Hudson Show she declared ‘it’s time’; the couple are pictured with daughter Jagger, seven, and son Ziggy, two, along with Simpson’s son Bronx, 14, from her first marriage to Fall Out Boy star Pete Wentz
Along with her debut, Simpson also released the follow-up, I Am Me (2005), which contained the singles Boyfriend and L.O.V.E., that went on to be be certified platinum.
Her third and last solo album, Bittersweet World (2008), marked a shift in her sound to a more dance-pop sound, and ended up being the least successful of the three recordings.
Simpson and her husband, who have been married for more than eight years, are the proud parents to daughter Jagger, seven, and son Ziggy, two.
The Ashlee Simpson Show star also has a teenage son Bronx, 14, that she shares with her ex-husband, and Fall Out Boy bassist, Pete Wentz.
Ross played an important role in their wedding in 2014, by officiating the ceremony and singing at the reception.
